Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ‘97… wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be IT.

The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded. But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.

You are NOT as fat as you imagine.

Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

 

Sing.

Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours.

 

Floss.

Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind. The race is long, and in the end, it’s only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.

 

Stretch.

Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don’t.

Get plenty of calcium.

Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself, either. Your choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s. Enjoy your body, use it every way you can. Don’t be afraid of it, or what other people think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own.

Dance. Even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.

Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.

Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for good.

Be nice to your siblings; they are your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography in lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you’ll have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.

Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you’re 40, it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

Today is the first day of spring… there is snow on the ground and it’s breezy and in the 40’s. Spring in Maine. Soon, so soon… each day beckons the buds on the trees a little more, the trickling ice-flows forming little streams seeping into basements and ponds. Spring in Maine. Branches to pick up, hoses to get out, seedlings to start, walks on the beach in a light sweatshirt, washing the car, walking around town… Spring in Maine.

This is my second spring in Maine. I appreciate this one more than first. Winter is long. I thought that most Mainer’s just love the winter and don’t care about it’s ending, but know that I talk to more people I’ve learned that this is the time of year that everyone is ready for some balmy weather. Last year when J and I were hanging out by his skate ramp a warm breeze came through the air and I said that it felt balmy. J replied asking if I had ever called that a warm eddy. I asked him what the heck a warm eddy was and he told me exactly that, a nice warm breeze coming up from the valley. I like that term… warm eddy, and I am ready to feel them again.

The scroll bar can easily slide images

After a lot of hard work by Team Space Pirate’s webmaster, Samuel Bennett, our new Online Image Gallery is up. Sam dialed things in using new lightview technology and some web-design savvy. Now you can scroll through years of Doodlism and click on any image to enlarge it and see it as a close-up. An additional close-up will soon accompany each image, and we are going to be adding dozens of original pieces from J’s collection to our online archives. Keep an eye on it…

Love

Then said Almitra, “Speak to us of Love.”

And he raised his head and looked upon the people, and there fell a stillness upon them.

When you love you should not say, “God is in my heart,” but rather, I am in the heart of God.”

And think not you can direct the course of love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.

But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.

To know the pain of too much tenderness.

To be wounded by your own understanding of love;

And to bleed willingly and joyfully.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;

To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;

To return home at eventide with gratitude;

And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

J’s images provoke thought, consciousness, spirituality, soul, and positive vibes. ‘ Happy Bear’ is a smile waiting to happen. So many times throughout my day I realize how long it has been since I have taken a deep breath and smiled. When I do, the feeling that fills my soul is rejuvenating. When I first looked at the Happy Bear design, I noticed the smile. A big happy smile. The kind of smile that, when you see one, your day can change just like that.

Looking at Happy Bear through my adult eyes, I saw the most Happy Bear ever, a radiant smile and beaming eyes. On a second glance ,the child inside of me all of the sudden saw what filled the Bear, a magical cornucopia overflowing with a choo-choo trains, cats, dogs, children, a lion, a monkey, an elephant, a rabbit and a whole menagerie of fun friends that you can spend all day looking at. Happy Bear. Good Stuff.

One morning this past fall, I got up to let the dog out and as I opened the door to a face full of crisp New England fall air I noticed the coolest thing in my backyard. There had been a heavy frost that morning and the sun was working hard to burn it off. The only remaining frost in my backyard was hiding on the grass that was covered by the shadow of an elderly apple tree. The tree cast it’s shadow across the yard,and the frost gave the shadow a silver lining.

Some days we have time and energy to take in the little things. It’s the little things that make life so special each and every day. Too many days the little things slip into the cracks of our lives… stress, anxiety, fears and the such. Stopping and taking a deep breath and appreciating what we have can fill in these cracks and let us see the little things that can make a crying person smile. I try to remember how fortunate I am, and how many wonderful little things there are in my life every day.
